Over 150 public facilities have been closed in the city of Kumamoto, southwestern Japan, after an earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale shook the area on Tuesday. This includes such facilities as schools, community centers, sports arenas, and libraries, along with other important tourist attractions such as Museum of Contemporary Art and Suizenji Sports Park, while businesses in the region suspend their activity to examine the safety of buildings and utilities which have been cut off because of the earthquake.  Rescue and recovery efforts are currently being performed overnight at the most urgent disaster areas, including partially destroyed Aeon Mall in Kashima and Nippon Paper factory in Yatsushiro, where some people are still missing.
